Black cloth with dirty gold letters. The true 1st edition, 1st printing looks very different than all the later editions. Here is a link just in case you haven't seen a copy. See here. The first printing was published in 1923 by George H. Doran. The first is also a larger book compared to all the later reprints. In late 1923, George H. Doran reprinted the title in a smaller format. This was the last time it was published by GHD. In 1927/1928, George H. Doran merged with DoubleDay becoming DoubleDay, Doran & Company, Inc. After the merger ( for a few years) the book was still being published with the 1923 copyright date. There were no additional dates to indicate that it was a reprint. Since then this fact has led to a great deal of confusion. Some collectors will often pay a hefty premium for a copy bearing the 1923 date believing that it is the first edition. In 1930 DDC began using the correct date.
